Spelling Bee Showdown
English game
How to play
- The teacher picks a level, then presses Start round for the active team.
- The word is read out automatically. Press 🔊 Hear it again any time you need a replay.
- The student spells the word out loud, one letter at a time. The teacher clicks each letter on the on-screen keyboard as it is said (the keyboard on your computer works too). Use ⌫ to fix a mistake and the apostrophe key for words like they’re.
- Press Check spelling (or Enter) when the student has finished. A correct spelling scores points and builds the streak. A wrong one breaks the streak and shows the correct spelling.
- If a student can’t spell a word, press Pass. It counts as a wrong answer, so the correct spelling is shown and any penalty applies.
- When time is up, the next team becomes active.
Options
- Pictures — the button in the corner of the word card switches pictures on or off (your choice is remembered). Pictures are only available for the Easy words; Moderate and Hard show no pictures either way.
Difficulty levels
| Level | Audience | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Primary | Short 3–4 letter words, with a picture if pictures are on. 180 seconds, no penalty. 1 point each. |
| Moderate | Lower secondary | Common 6–8 letter words people often misspell (because, believe, separate…). 150 seconds, wrong answer costs 1. 2 points each. |
| Hard | Upper secondary | Silent-letter words (knife, subtle, autumn) and homophones (their/there/they’re, its/it’s) given in a sentence so you know which one is meant. 120 seconds, wrong answer costs 1. 3 points, plus a bonus every 5 in a row. |
